Ellie 8.4: Relationship Editor – Getting Ready for Reusable Relationships

Release

CTO
Abstract:
Ellie 8.4 introduces a completely rebuilt Relationship Editor, providing a dedicated interface for creating, reviewing, and managing entity relationships across models. The previous approach embedded relationship definition within the canvas workflow, making it difficult to review and standardize relationships at scale. The new editor surfaces relationships as first-class objects with their own management view — setting the architectural groundwork for the reusable relationship capabilities that would arrive in Ellie 8.8. For teams with complex relationship structures across large model libraries, 8.4 represents a significant usability improvement in the governance of inter-entity connections.

In Ellie 8.4, we’ve introduced a completely new Relationship Editor that makes working with connections between your entities clearer, faster, and more powerful. This is more than just a UI upgrade — it’s the first step toward our upcoming reusable relationships feature.

What’s New in the Relationship Editor

1. Name & Description Fields
Give your relationships a meaningful name and optional description. Named relationships can be reused across models in the future, helping you keep terminology and logic consistent between business and technical layers.

2. Flexible Label Placement
Add up to two directional labels anywhere along the line — no more awkward overlaps or hard-to-read labels in dense diagrams.

3. Direction Controls at Your Fingertips
Quickly flip direction or hide direction indicators to match your modeling needs.

4. Cardinality Editing Made Easy
Click either end of the relationship line to change relationship type — one, many, or zero-or-more — without leaving the canvas.

Why It Matters

The new Relationship Editor isn’t just about convenience — it’s about consistency, clarity, and reusability. With names, descriptions, and flexible labeling, you can clearly document the meaning and rules of each relationship. This lays the groundwork for our next big step: defining relationship patterns once and reusing them across your entire modeling landscape.

A More Visual, Streamlined Experience

The editor now lives in a right-hand sidebar, letting you work without losing context on your diagram. Every change you make updates instantly on the canvas, so you can see the impact right away.

Next Stop: Reusable Relationships

With Ellie 8.4, we’ve set the stage for relationships that can be defined once and applied anywhere. This means:

  • Less repetitive work when building new models.
  • More alignment between teams and projects.
  • Easier maintenance when rules change.

Stay tuned — reusable relationships are coming soon.
